Pieta Futsal vs Versity AFC                 -           5 – 2

Squad: D Camilleri (G), R Zammit, D Grima, C Zammit, J Ellul Soler;

Scorer: C Zammit, J Ellul Soler;

Fielding just 5 players Versity held their ground up to the first period where they were sharing the spoils at 1-1.  However, after the change of ends Pieta who had more fresh legs got the upper hand. To make matters worse Grima got injured and Versity’s misery was further compounded. Finally Versity succumbed for a final score line of 5 – 2.

Versity AFC vs Safi Southsiders                       -           2 – 3

Squad: D Camilleri (G), R Zammit, D Grima, D Carabott, C Zammit, E Sciberras;

Scorers: C Zammit (2);

In this match Versity were pretty outplayed in the first period and Safi Southsiders were 3 – 0 up at halftime and probably already looking at the match as a pure formality. However, Versity recovered very well in the second period and got two goals back from a C Zammit who had a very positive. However, Versity could not salvage a point against the leaders as the last acrobatic chance by Grima was somehow saved from Safi’s gaoler.

Versity AFC vs Classic Futsal Club      -           0 – 7

Squad: D Grima (G), R Zammit, J Rizzo, C Zammit, E Sciberras, J Ellul Soler;

Fielding one of their players as gaoler Versity produced one of their worst performances so far. It was a day marred by continuous errors and once Classic FC took the lead and Versity squandered its chances to recover, Classics just had it their way. By half-time they were already 6 – 0 up and the second period was just a case of damage limitation for Versity. A game best forgotten!!

Versity AFC vs St Helen Band Club     -           1 – 3

Squad: D Agius (G), D Grima, R Zammit, C Zammit, E Sciberras, D Carabott;

Scorers: E Sciberras;

Versity were coming from a drubbing and seemed intent on improving on that performance. The start was pretty good and Versity also took a deserved lead through an Elvin good goal against a good team. Versity could have doubled but some good goalkeeping and lack of luck did not allow them to do so. Versity led 1 – 0 by half-time. However, after change of ends a dubious referee decision allowed St Helen BC to get possession from which they equalised.  St Helen grabbed the moment and soon went on to score the second and take the lead. As Versity pressed for the equaliser, St Helen scored a third and killed off any lingering hopes. To be mentioned the great performance of D Agius in goal who gave a very assured performance.

Versity AFC vs Capital Boys                -           0 – 2 w/o ifo Capital boys

The festive season and the problems of ill-health had their toll on Versity as they did not have enough players to field for this match and thus referees did not allow the match to commence

Versity AFC vs Busy Bee                      -           5  – 1

Squad: D Agius (G), S Ferrante, R Zammit, C Zammit, E Sciberras, D Carabott, J Rizzo;

Scorers: C Zammit (2), R Zammit (2), J Rizzo;

Fielding Ferrante for the first time Versity settled in quickly and after sharing the opening exchanges took the lead through C Zammit. Shortly afterwards they doubled through R Zammit. Leading 2 – 0 at half-time was a good boost and on change of ends Versity continued where it left unsettling their opponents and finding a third goal.  Some lack of attention allowed Busy Bee to find the net and re-open the match. However, Versity quickly restored the three goal cushion and towards the end found a last goal through Rizzo for a final 5 – 1 scoreline

Versity AFC vs ECB                            -           6    9

Squad: D Camilleri (G), S Ferrante, R Zammit, C Zammit, E Sciberras, D Carabott, J Rizzo;

Scorers: C Zammit (2), R Zammit (2), E Sciberras S Ferrante ;

In an open match which saw both teams attacking at will with little importance to defending the match turned out to be interesting for the neutral bystander. At the end of the match the better sharpness and cool finishing of ECB prevailed to hand Versity defeat.

Versity AFC  vs Pieta Futsal                -           0 – 2 w/o ifo Pieta Futsal

The flu got its upper-hand whereas a player who was late did not allow Versity to play this important match which concerned the relegation zone.  Losing these points could well cost Versity their place and be relgated.

Safi Southsiders vs Versity AFC                       -           10 - 2

Squad: D Camilleri (G), S Ferrante, R Zammit, C Zammit, D Grima, K Bonnici;

Scorers: D Grima, S Ferrante ;

Safi Southsiders exposed a disjointed Versity who had little answer to their opponents play which apart from showing very good skill were agile and moved the ball very swiftly.  Versity’s goaler was at fault but no less were the other members who failed in covering and marking well in the second period.  After the early minutes Safi took the lead and shortly afterwards doubled the score. Versity replied back with a well-taken Grima goal but as Versity pressed to find an equaliser Safi scored a third. Versity came out hopeful that they can have a say.  However after a poorly let in goal, hopes seemed to fade and Versity threw in the towel whereas Safi scored at will apart from a consolation goal courtesy of Ferrante

Classic Futsal Club vs Versity AFC      -           1 – 2

Squad: D Camilleri (G), C Zammit, D Grima, K Bonnici, R Schembri, J Ellul Soler;

Scorers: J Ellul Soler, C Zammit;

With Versity practically relegated the team went down to honour the fixture.  However, for Versity there was more at stake whereby they wanted to recover from the drubbing of the previous match.  And so it was.  With a transformed Camilleri in goal who saved whatever came his way and a defence well marshalled by Grima with Bonnici marking well, Ellul Soler jinking around and enjoying his game, whereas Zammit and Schembri showing good skill and composure Versity were a different team to what was seen in the previous match.  Classic FC after having beaten Versity so handsomely in the first round would not be faulted for thinking that the match will be a formality in order to earn 3 more points.  Versity had other thoughts.  Taking the game to their opponents Versity found the net through Ellul Soler. From there they controlled proceedings and on a good counter doubled the lead.  Unfortunately they could not add further goals and the half ended 2 – 0. On the change of ends Classics came out determined to get back into the match. In fact they pinned Versity on the defensive but Camilleri saved whenever, Classics found a glimpse of his goal or else the post came to his rescue especially when a thunderous shot hit the upright and rebounded to safety.  Versity had their chances and both Zammit and Schembri should have done better. Classics eventually found the net and this set-up a tense finale but Versity held out for a morale boosting win.
